Happy Tuesday!! Last week was so fun linking up with My Day in K and Teach, Talk, Inspire for Tell All Tuesday and I am excited to be back again! Today the linky is about our Summer Snapshot! This summer has been full of fun and exciting things for me so choosing one that sums it up was a little hard!!

Here it is!

For starters, my sister got married!! All of the planning and the appointments came down to this beautiful day! It was the most amazing experience and I am so glad that I was a part of it. I have never had as much fun as I did with my family that night! We spent the whole time either taking pictures in the photobooth, singing on stage with the band (some of us had real talent!), and dancing the night away...literally! It was amazing to see almost every single person was on the dance floor for the whole night and that alone made it a great time. It was definitely a night to remember and the highlight of my summer! I cannot wait for another family wedding!

The other part of my snapshot is from my summer volleyball league! A group of teachers from my school decided to join our park district's summer volleyball league for fun, emphasis on the FUN!!! We play every week and laugh so much I sometimes can't stand up. I am glad we know how to have fun because we really don't know how to play volleyball...haha Let's just say we are a sight to see!! Thankfully, most of the teams we play enjoy our humor and make the games fun, even if we don't win ;)

Thanks for checking out my post!! Make sure to link back up and share your Summer Snapshot! :)

I am excited to kick it off with sharing two truths and one lie! Have fun and good luck trying to figure out which is which ;)

1. Originally when I went into college, I wanted to teach high school.

2. My favorite food is cheeseburgers.

3. When I worked at a local ice cream shop, we were robbed and held at gun point.

Believe it or not, it is actually really hard to come up with these!!
Which is my lie?!? Leave a comment with your guess!
Happy Sunday ya'll!!!!! Hope your weekend has been relaxing (who am I kidding, it flies by quicker than imaginable!) My little rays and I survived the first week back from Spring Break better than I thought! Check out my scoop below!

Have to: I have got to get myself signed up for my next grad school class for this summer (boo!). I also have to finalize some of the things that are needed for our District's Kindergarten Transition Fair. I have loved being a part of the committee and getting to see the 'behind the scenes' for how the whole thing gets put together! I also have got to get my wardrobe cleaned out! Time to say buh-bye to all of the clothes I do not wear as well as my winter clothes as I bring out the fun spring and summer ones!

Hope to: I hope to have all of my materials printed and ready to go Monday so that I am prepped and organized for the week! I also hope to get to run outside a few times this week! Running inside is NO comparison to the beauty of the outdoor runs!

Love to: I would love to be able to wear SPRING clothes this week. Considering it is April, it would be nice to finally have some weather that DOES NOT involve my winter coat.

I am SO excited to be linking up with Kinder Tribe to take part in What Worked Well Wednesday!! After racking my brain on what to use for this post, I thought of something that I learned recently at the ILASCD Conference and have since implemented!

My students have always enjoyed our writing station during Daily Five. Whether they are doing a write the room, practicing sight words or other activities, they are always engaged and active the whole time. Towards January/February, however, we were kind of hitting a wall! We needed something new and exciting to add some flavor to our writing station. I attended the IL ASCD Conference In the beginning of March and BOOM it hit me! It was actually in the FIRST session that I learned about the newest addition to station: MINI BOOKS! (Pictures will be added!!!)

I was intrigued the moment that Sarah Howe started talking about the mini books and new that they would be a hit! The whole idea behind a mini book is that the students are practicing their parts of a book, being authors and illustrators, and gaining confidence in their writing!

Mini books are essentially 4-8 square pages (and easily less or more to differentiate) of paper stapled together on one side. (Again, pictures WILL be added ;) ) My students are allowed to choose any appropriate topic to write about. We always review how our words and pictures need to correspond and that a pretty picture needs COLOR! At the beginning we were a little stuck on what to write about, but since they have gotten used to it, I have seen SO many different kinds of stories! They are SO proud of their writing and always ask if they can show me, another teacher, or their friends what they produced.

We use the mini books in other areas besides Daily Five. When we read There's a Wocket in My Pocket, we made our own mini book using new rhymes to go along with the book! It was such a fun activity and my little rays loved showing their parents during conferences!

Pictures will be added tomorrow (I am a little scatter-brained!!!)!!

Thanks for checking out WWW Wednesday!

Here we are folks! Two months to go until the end of the school year. Whether that means kick it into overdrive or survival mode, here is the friendly reminder that

YOU CAN DO IT!!!

The question is, how are you going to make it to the end?? Maybe your students are feeling the spring fever, maybe their work is a little on the lazy side, what can YOU do to help motivate, stimulate, and ENGAGE your little rays of sun?!?!!?

I thought I would put together a few ideas for how I am going to keep my kiddos engaged in our learning, excited, and focused to finish out the year STRONG!!

Stay Organized: Don't let the rainy weather or fact that you are almost done keep you from staying on your A game! You have made it so far to get lazy now!! I always find this is the most important time of year to keep myself organized both personally and professionally. My plan is to stay after on Fridays for about an hour. Hopefully this will give me the time to print my copies for the next week and have materials prepped! This plan will HOPEFULLY keep things running smoothly and will make a few less gray hairs happen ;)

Keep Things Fresh: Fresh & Fun! Even in the end of the year, it is important to hold your kiddos to the same high standards as you have throughout the year. That being said, make it your intention to bring FUN into their learning. The more engaging your lessons and activities are, the less likely that the SPRING FEVER will strike and take down the class!!! I am thrilled to begin our A-Z Countdown that will get us through the last 26 days of school! Besides that, I am making sure that we switch up centers more frequently and am giving my students more partner work to get them using their vocabulary and strategies that they have learned. I am so excited to see them interacting more and more with their peers and using what they have learned to explain their reasoning in both math and reading!!

Set Goals: Setting is goals is a huge way to keep yourself on track and finishing STRONG through the last two months! Not only setting goals for yourself, but helping your students set goals is a major way to keep them motivated, focused, and invested in their learning. We are working on creating our Word Worms (thank you Mr. Greg!!!) to help us really master our sight words as well as upping our A.R. goals so that we are pushing ourselves to read more and strengthening our comprehension!! When your students get to be part of the goal-setting process, they are SO much more likely to stay true to it and put in that extra effort!! While setting goals and throughout the rest of the two months, ENCOURAGE, ENCOURAGE, ENCOURAGE!! Be your kiddos #1 fan and supporter! Be the cheerleader that pushes them! I know we are all these things for them regardless of the time of year, but NOW is SO important!!!!

Don't Give Up: You are amazing. You are inspirational. You are life changing. You are a beautiful soul. It takes such a special person to dedicate their life (seriously, unless you are a teacher or are married to one, no one will ever understand the amount of time and love we put into our teaching) to helping students. And not just helping students learn math. Not just teaching reading or showing them how to walk in a straight line. We show these wonderful little beings how to live, learn, and love. How to be a friend, how to desire to be their very best self, and how to NEVER give up. They aren't just a five or six, or however many years old child that you have for 9 months. They are SO much more than that. You defend them, you cry for them, you laugh with them, you push them. They are your children and they make a mark on your life that you will remember forever. Not only that, but YOU made a difference in their life. No matter the child, the behavior, the academic/social/emotional skill or level, you were there for them. They will NEVER forget that. Don't give up now. You are better than that. They deserve your 100% and you CAN do it. After all, teaching is a super power!!

Can you survive the last two months? What a silly questions, OF COURSE YOU CAN. You are an educator, a motivator, an inspiration. Keep on teaching on because, GIRL, you work it.

Happy Sunday, friends!!! As Spring Break comes to an end for me, I am ready to kick some booty as I head into the April and May (the HOME STRETCH) months! These last two months will absolutely FLY by so I am trying to get myself somewhat on track ;) I am linking up with The Teaching Trio for Sunday Scoop!! I love using this as a way for me to kind of keep myself accountable for things I have this week and being able to see what all my teacher friends are up to!!
Have to do:
I am BEYOND excited to start some new guided reading plans! Thanks to one of my biggest inspirations, Deanna Jump, I am totally ready to do an overhaul and tackle the skills my kiddos need EVEN BETTER than before!!! (More to come about that!) I also am on the committee for planning our district-wide Kindergarten Transition Fair. I work with teachers throughout our district to plan an event welcoming incoming kindergarteners and there are a few things left I need to tackle with that! I also need to do LESSON PLANS! A week of Spring Break has me all kinds of backwards so I cannot wait to get my plans laid out and start the week. Did I really just say that????????? Excited for lesson plans?? WHO AM I?

Hope to do:
I really need to get back into reading each night! For a month or so I dedicated about 30 minutes each night to reading a book as a way to unwind and I loved it! It totally relaxed me before bed and reading is one of my favorite hobbies so I definitely need to get back into it! If you have any book suggestions, COMMENT BELOW!!! I need to get my life in general organized. Spring Break always throws be for a loop so I need to sit down, get my personal and professional lives back on track!

Love to do:
I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE MY LITTLE ONES!!!!! A week that was much needed on both ends is plenty of time to make me miss my little rays! I cannot wait to greet them in the morning, hear about their breaks, and get right back into the swing of things.

Thanks for checking out my scoop!!!! Be sure to head back to The Teaching Trio to link up and share yours :)
Somebody stop the calendar for a second!!! How in heaven's name is it already April?!?!?!!? On one hand I am thrilled and ready for a summer vacation, on the other hand, (a little more on this hand might I add!) I am totally not ready to let my little rays go! This group is one that I have bonded with so much and they have made such a huge impact on my life! Each year I get very attached to the wonderful group of kiddos that come in young and ready to learn and turning them over as older, more mature (HA), and sponges full of knowledge makes me tear up just thinking about it! Okay, sob story done... Sorry I got side tracked!!!!

It is April 1st and that means APRIL FOOLS DAY!!! Well that, and CURRENTLY!! I am headed full swing into April and May as months to truly get back into blogging because let's be real people, it is one of the most relaxing thing for me!!!
Happy Monday!!!!! I am a little off on my week already since we did not have school today (holla at my Polish heritage and Casimir Pulaski)!!! Ready to head into this week with some fun and exciting lessons! Still feeling SO fresh after my conference in Schaumburg this past weekend (check out my post on that here!!) Tonight I am sharing a Peek at My Week with my teaching twin, Beginnings With Baer to give you a peek at what our week will entail!!

ELA
This week, we are focusing on Dr. Seuss (hello Seussville!!!) and will practice our rhyming! We will continue to practice our digraphs by using a lot of whole group and partner work! I am super excited to get some of our new centers up and running. I also want to revamp some of our Guided Reading block so stay tuned for that! We also will be assessing our sight words.

MATH
We are continuing with decomposing numbers 11-20 and I cannot wait to get some hands-on learning with manipulatives and interactice tools! With end of 3rd quarter coming, we are working hard to master our skills! Fluency checks will be happening this week to make sure we known our subitizing skills and facts to 5!

SOCIAL STUDIES/WRITING
Like I mentioned above, DR SEUSS IS IN KINDERGARTEN THIS WEEK! Sorry, I may be very thrilled ;) We will be diving into Dr. Seuss during our writing time! Last week, my kiddos worked on the biography of Dr. Seuss for their social studies and got a chance to explore some close reading through it. We will be reading his books, practicing opinion writing, and sharing new ideas! I cannot wait to get going!!

A fun week is in store for room 103! Thanks for checking out my peek!!!! Make sure you head over to Beginnings With Baer to check out what her firsties are up to!Molly Karpowiczhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01512137325388747666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2777809958137018197.post-75877398185961341592016-03-06T20:36:00.000-06:002016-04-06T20:41:15.098-05:00IL ASCD Kindergarten Conference 2016Happy <strike>Saturday</strike> SUNDAY (okay, it was Saturday when I started writing this!!!)! I should probably change the title of this post to "Two days jam-packed with AMAZING presentations, ideas, and lessons from some of my FAVORITE bloggers and educators" or "OMG I FOUND DEEDEE AGAIN!" (I am only slightly sorry for the slight obsession). Anywho, I was lucky enough to get to go to the IL ASCD Conference that was hosted in Schaumburg, IL for the SECOND time on March 3 & 4. Let me tell you, if you ever have the chance to attend, even if just for a day, GO!! It is SO worth the sub lesson plans, and THAT is saying something ;)

A little background on the conference itself: The conference is a two-day event that offers over 11 different one-hour sessions to attend as well as two key note speakers and a whole lot of booths and exhibits to see! It is a teacher's heaven!!!! Any topic that you are interested in seeing, there is probably a session for it! Music, technology, literacy, mathematics, fine motor, differentiation, classroom management, assessment, science, yoga in the classroom, etc! There are so many wonderful opportunities to hear some AMAZING and INSPIRING educators speak about. My favorite part is that almost all of the speakers are either currently teaching or recently out of the classroom so the information that they share is RELEVANT and helpful!

Now onto MY experience!!!! I attended this very conference with my teacher teammate Life in the Fast Lane last Spring and fell in love with it. As soon as January rolled around, we knew we had to go again! I could not wait to flip through the pamphlet and see who would be there and what topics would be presented!!! Now selecting the sessions that I wanted to go to came down to a science. Since some sessions repeat, I had to make a big chart on like 6 notebook pages that had all the ones I knew I wanted to go to FOR SURE. Once I made sure that I could go to all those ones, I filled in the blanks. I ran into a few errors when I saw a session that I was not sure about or when I switched a few around, but hours later, I WAS READY TO SIGN UP!!

The sessions I attended:
Thursday:
Sarah Howe: Empowering Little Writers
*My first session was with Sarah Howe, and I LOVED it!!!! She gave an amazing presentation about how she does writing in her classroom. She has an amazing system that she uses and she introduced us to the concept of mini book writing! She gave each of us our own to use as an example when creating our own! (I am sure I will make a post about this later once we begin using them!!!)

Deedee Wills (Mrs. Wills Kindergarten) - Assessment
* Oh me oh my! I mean, c'mon! It is DEEDEE! Of course I was excited to hear her speak, but her presentation was amazing. Her concepts on how to easily assess students informally was so simple and yet I had not even thought about it!

Deanna Jump (Mrs. Jump's Class) - Read, Set, READ
I LOVED this session. So much information that talked about how to use writing and reading in the classroom in a way that excites students. She explained how a reading lesson should go, how to use fun voices to intrigue the students, and how to get students to use inquiry based thinking. One thing that Deanna talked about was how when they do reading and writing prompts, she never asks for an example before they start writing because, like most, once a student hears an example it is the only one that they can think about! I also love her SWBS (somebody wanted but so then) and how interactive it was and concrete for students to fully grasp!

Kim Jordano (Kinder by Kim) - Move Over! Here Comes the MATH WALL!
*I mean, could you find a funnier educator? Seriously, she brings the real talk to teaching! I love how personable and real she is! Kim explained the Math Wall that she uses in her classroom and I am in love. Like actually figuring out where I can put this kind of wall in my room. She does so many things with her students that push them to think and are INCREDIBLY differentiated for all of the needs of her students!

Greg Smedley-Warren (Kindergarten Smorgasbord) - Reading Rituals & Routines
*I loved learning about Mr. Greg's Reading Routines (seriously amazing!) The amount of things that his students are able to accomplish in set time frames is amazing and definitely something I am eager to apply in my classroom!
Jen Jones (Hello Literacy) -Word Up! Vocabulary Instruction in the Primary Classroom
*I mean, what a way to start day two! I have been dying to see Jen Jones present and I was NOT disappointed!!! She brought some amazing technology into her presentation and showed us how to integrate it into our students' learning vocabulary. We even got to get up and play a quick round of Quiz, Quiz, Trade (holler at me Kagan!!)! I never realized how easy it is to put tier two and three vocabulary into everyday conversations and how switching words around helps students grasp the concepts. I love how she mentioned that we should never ask our students to define something, but rather EXPLAIN it. With this way, you are able to see if your student truly understands the word! She showed us Flocabulary (which I am totallllly going to be using! PLAIN AND SIMPLE, GUYS, SHE ROCKS!
Deedee Wills (Mrs. Wills Kindergarten) - Peek at My Week
*Of course I had to see Mrs. Wills again! She gave us a glimpse at her week, how she sets it up with lesson plans and how her daily routines happen. I would love to be a fly on the wall in her room! Seriously she has so many amazing ideas. I love her visual lesson plans and hope to begin those again after a long hiatus!
Kathy took us all the way back to beginning of August/September and those fist 30 days with our BABIES (literally, they are so small when they start!!) She shared how she gets her procedures started right away and how she teachers quiet signs as well as strategies for students to get their wiggles out while listening.
Deedee Wills (Mrs. Wills Kindergarten)- Math Stations
*Oops, signed up for another session with Deedee ;) I was eager to hear about math stations because our school does them quite different from many of the teachers that I have looked at. I love how structured her Math Stations are. I am currently trying to figure out how I can work the structure that she uses to fit my math workshop needs. I love that she regroups between stations so that students are able to process what they did and explain what they learned or how they were successful! Also LOVE her math tool kits! Each student has a partner with a binder that has all of the math manipulatives and templates that are needed for the week.
Deanna Jump (Mrs. Jump's Class) - Guided Reading 101
*Going out with a bang!! Ended my amazing two days with Mrs. Jump (and loved every second of it!) Deanna shared how her guided reading set up is and the strategies she uses to teach each group. She explained how she doesn't start her guided reading groups until after the first 4 weeks of school. I love the strategies and songs that she uses to help strengthen her student's fluency. I currently have like all of her guided reading materials sitting in my basket on tpt ;)
OMG. I mean SYSTEM OVERLOAD!!!!!!!!! So much information. Hold on- SO MUCH AMAZING, CREATIVE, HELPFUL, INSPIRING, LIFE-CHANGING, EXCITING, (I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS) INFORMATION!!!!!

The sessions that I attended provided me with such a wealth of information, and not just statistics or blah blah information. No no no! I am talking useful information and ideas that I can take and ACTUALLY apply in my classroom. Deedee and Deanna both had great sessions on math and literacy stations as well as guided reading (definitely a huge fan of Deedee's students' seats with dual storage purposes!) and all I can say is I am ready to revamp and organize how to best meet my students' needs efficiently and effectively. I also LOVE the idea of a "Dessert Tub" that Deedee shared. She got the idea from another one of my FAVORITE bloggers Cara Carroll from The First Grade Parade! It is a task for students to do if they complete work early. Remember, not all students will get dessert ;) The ideas that they share are seriously SO simple and require little prep! There was not one point at any of the sessions where they told you to buy their products, instead, they provided so many ways to do these stations without having to buy a thing!

The major thing that I took away from the conference as a whole is to DO YOU. Take the ideas, the lessons, the guidelines and make them YOU. Your classroom will not look like anybody else's classroom. It isn't supposed to. You have to find what works for you and your babes. How remarkable. I mean it. How remarkable that your classroom is completely different from all others. Your classroom is where YOU and YOUR STUDENTS get to challenge each other to dig deeper, work harder, and have fun learning. By listening to the PASSION and EXCITEMENT in each and every presenter I was blessed to listen to, I felt so happy, so at peace. I loved all the ideas that I got. I am so eager to take WHAT I learned and manipulate it so that it works in my classroom, it has MY spin on it, and it helps MY kiddos.
It will be a little Seussy in Room 103!!!!! I also have to build my new organizer that will hopefully keep me prepped and ready week by week ;) ANNNND I have laundry that is long over due to get done!

HOPE TO DO:
I hope to get my closet reorganized for spring clothes! Love the switch out and seeing the brighter colors (I may be guilty of a very black winter wardrobe)! I also hope that I will get to be outside more! I would love to get some miles in outdoors, because everyone knows outdoor miles feel SO much better than indoor miles!!
LOVE TO DO:
I can't wait to get a mani and pedi with my blogging twin! Some much needed relaxation and twin time! A little pampering never hurt anyone, right ;)

Monday is here and I am in shock that it is already March (well, tomorrow is)! This year could not be flying any faster! This week is a short week for me because I will be heading to the ILASCD Conference in Schaumburg, IL (EEK YAY!!) which means sub plans (ick!). I know my little rays will be just fine with a sub but at the same time it kills me to leave them for two days!!! You can bet I will be hugging them a little too tight when they leave on Wednesday ;) Anywho, here is my Peek at My Week! Check out what my little rays will be focusing on this week. When you're done, head over to my teaching twin's blog Beginnings With Baer to see what is going on with her firsties!!!

ELA
We are continuing with digraphs and blends as well as making connections with stories we are reading. We will be working on some small Dr. Seuss stuff this week as well! Our stations for Daily Five are ready for some SPRING cleaning so I will be introducing a few new activities for my kiddos!

MATH
We have done a lot of work with base ten and composing numbers in the teens so now it is time to break it on down! We will be turning our focus from creating teen numbers and making connections with base ten to breaking apart teen numbers and showing their relationship via base ten blocks. I am super excited to see how we rock it out!

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE
March 2nd this week AKA EVERY ELEMENTARY TEACHER'S FAVORITE DAY. We get to celebrate the wonderful man, Dr. Seuss (aka Theodore Geisel)! We will do a brief introduction this week along with some activities before we SEUSSIFY our room and hallway for a two week unit on Dr. Seuss books! I am THRILLED! This is probably one of my top favorite units to do (for obvious reasons!) Stay tuned to see what we do to celebrate!

WRITING
We have been working on our WIZARD WRITING and every student in room 103 is currently enrolled in Miss K's Writing School for Wizards. At the end of each day, we get our wizards attire on (hats, robes, wands, and all!) We have focused on quite a few elements of writing so far, such as how to write a complete sentence and how to add details to a sentence. My little rays have done an AMAZING job. I am so impressed with the writing I have seen and cannot wait to see what we will have this week! We will be working on editing a sentence, sharing with peers, and using descriptive writing to share about our favorite things.

ELA:
We are continuing our work with digraphs and blends in our morning activities and reading! We have been working with our partner class (Life in the Fast Lane) to listen to words that have digraphs or blends in them and the students with the correct letters have to get up and get into the right order! It has been amazing to see the kiddos who it clicks with and who we need to work more with! We are also working on making connections in our reading and writing!

MATH:
BASE TEN! I love me some base ten! The previous two weeks, we focused on 10 and some more and have now successfully moved onto base ten! My kiddos (AND I) love how interactive base ten can be! Whether we use giant pool noodles, manipulatives, or engaging activities, such as I Have, Who Has, my little rays are so into it!

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are learning all about how to keep our teeth happy and healthy! Focusing on the healthy foods and drinks that are important in our diet is a main idea. My students were quite quick at point out "Miss K, didn't you say soda was not good for your teeth or your body?" "Uhm, yes, yes I did." Yikes, Miss K! You sure drink a lot of that stuff. Are you going to lose your teeth soon?" LOL! Hope not!!!!

WRITING:
WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WIZARD WRITING! We just started a new unit on writing and our theme is, yep you guessed it, WIZARDS! We will be working on capitalization, details, and punctuation through a variety of themed lessons (Potion for a Perfect Sentence, Details Brew, Crystal Ball Capitalization). Stay tuned for a post about that and some fun pictures!!

Thanks for checking out my Peek at My Week! Be sure to head on over to Beginnings With Baer to see what is going on in her first grade class!!!!
We are back to Monday, so my teaching twin, Beginnings With Baer, and myself are sharing our Peek at My Week with you!!!! This Peek at My Week will give you a glimpse into what we will be teaching in our classrooms for the week!

ELA:

In ELA, we will be focusing on our long vowels, specifically long U!! We will incorporate this into our daily journals as well as whole group instruction! We will also be continuing to learn about digraphs. This week, I plan to do more instruction focused on blends. We are really working hard to get our sight words mastered by using Heidi's Songs!

MATH:
We are starting 10 and some more!! Teen numbers are one of my favorite things to teach in math. We started today by doing a pre assessment to see what we knew! I got some really creative results (lol!) and it makes me that much more excited to teach the concept! We will be doing a lot of interactive and hands-on learning to really target the skills!

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE:

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, we will be focusing many of our writing tasks and S.S/Science block on compassion! We will have our Friendship Day party on Friday to celebrate friendship and love! Students will be decorating boxes and passing out valentine's for their friends. Of course there will be fun treats ;)

WRITING:

We are going to be writing up a storm in room 103. I want to really strengthen my kiddo's writing skills. They seem to get the hang of uppercase letters and punctuation, but the spacing and complete sentences need a little bit more help ;) We will do some whole group copy writing to get a hang of spacing as well as some partner writing activities!

Thank you for checking out my Peek at My Week!! Be sure to head over to Beginnings With Baer's blog to see what Room 105 is up to this week!!!

MATH

We will be working on addition with totals of 9 and 10 this week. We will be working really hard on creating story problems and using our math strategies to find the answers. Students will be working with partners and small groups this week. One thing I am always trying to do is allow students to choose how they solve math problems the best. Is it easier to use manipulatives, pictures, or does it just pop in your head?? I challenge my kiddos to try to use at least two strategies each problem. One first to find the answer and then another to check the answer. I also try to pair students up with others who use different strategies so they are able to see the math a little differently.

ELA

We will continue to learn about long vowels. This week we will begin long I! My little rays are getting the long vowels a lot better than I thought! We will start by creating a circle map and thinking of words that say the letter 'i' in it. That is always my favorite part because the dialogue my kiddos exchange is amazing!!! We will continue to practice sight words and word families as well. Digraphs are on our agenda and we will be create a digraph anchor chart for each of my kiddos to keep!

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE

In Science this week we will be learning all about OUTER SPACE! What a fun unit to begin! We will talk about astronauts, do some close reading, talk planets, and do some crafts!! Gaggle has some great videos that explain outer space and has amazing pictures to show the kiddos. We will also be celebrating our 100th day of school, so Friday will be crazy (aka I will need a polar pop or TWO!!!)

WRITING

I love writing!! My kiddos impress me every day with how concentrated they are! We are definitely going to practice sounding out words this week. Last week we did a writing sample and I had a lot of kiddos that 'forgot' how to do it. As soon as I sat down to help them, they remembered. A little review never hurt, right?? ;) We will be writing about if we had an alien and we will do a fun writing activity for 100th day! The responses we get for "When I am 100 I will..." are always so comical!!

Have to do:
I have to finalize my 100th day plans! Friday marks 100 days of school! We will have plenty of fun including a 100th day FASHION SHOW! I need to finish some assignments for my Grad School class and work out because Spring Break is right around the corner!!

Hope to do:
My teaching bestie Beginnings with Baer and I have started a new weekly post on Mondays that give you a preview of what we will be working on in our classrooms for the week (Peek at My Week)! We HOPE that there will be some interest into making it a linky because we want to know what others are doing in their class! I also hope to FINALLY get the manicure that has been on my scoop for about two weeks ;)

Love to do:
Start planning for our District's Kindergarten Fair! Last year I got to be on the planning committee for the Kindergarten Fair and learned SO much! This year, I was invited again and am SUPER excited to get even more involved in planning :)
My teaching bestie, Beginnings With Baer and I decided to do a fun 'peek at my week' blog post on Mondays to share the main agenda on our teaching plans for the week!! Each week brings new ideas, lessons, and chances to bring some excitement into our classrooms! I am excited to get to share a little overview of my week!

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS:
In ELA, we will be working on long e! My kiddos have been LOVING anchor charts this year. We have tried to make as many as we can for any topic. Not only is it an amazing resource for them to look at when they are working at stations or independently, but talking about them as a whole group really excites them, challenges them to think about the topic at hand and provide answers, and gives them pride in seeing it hung up!! We will be using our Long E anchor chart to come up with words that have the Long E pattern! We learned all about long A last week and I can't tell you HOW many of my kiddos quickly caught onto it. I had so many reading throughout the day that would stop and frantically raise their hand, "MISS K!! I FOUND A LONG A!!!!!!" My kiddos crack me up <3 We will also be continuing to work on digraphs (of course we have an anchor for that as well!) and word families! The word families have helped their rhyming improve A LOT! I find that they have also given us a lot of confidence in our reading. My little rays have been able to decode words better and now are always eager to get a book in their hand!

MATH:
We will be continuing with subtraction this week! We have already introduced subtraction from numbers 1-8 so this week will introduce the numbers 9 and 10. We will be doing a lot of story problems and hands on learning for this concept! We like to use linking cubes, counters, and other manipulatives as we practice our story problems and number sentences! When I start each lesson, we review with some prompting questions:

1- What is subtraction?

2- How is subtraction different from addition?

3- What are some strategies we can use to find our subtraction answers?

4- Who can give me a subtraction story problem?

Subtraction bowling is a HUGE hit when we start talking about subtraction from 10! I plan to have a lot of partner work with enlarged number bonds, number lines, dice, and white boards, and giving my little rays the chance to work together and 'coach' each other through story problems and number sentences.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE:
Since we only have one block for Social Studies and Science, we switch off depending on the topic. This week, I will be using Tuesday and Wednesday to finish up MLK and Thursday and Friday for penguins! We talked about Martin Luther King Jr. last week and discussed what he did for our country. We watched a short clip from Kid President, but this week I plan to dig a little deeper! We will be using graphic organizers to help us track all the information we will be learning about! To finish up our unit, we will record OUR dreams next to MLK's! In science, we will discuss PENGUINS! I love me some cute little penguins. We will use Scholastic's "Let's Find Out!" resources to learn about where penguins live, their lifecycle, and more! We will also read "Tacky the Penguin", make a character map to describe Tacky, and make a Tacky the Penguin Craftivity! I got some of my ideas from A Spoonful of Learning and the Tacky the Penguin Craftivity from Live, Love, Laugh, Kindergarten.

WRITING:
I love pushing my little babes to write, write, write! The more we write, the more confident and excited my kiddos get to produce their own writing. In room 103, we are ALL authors ;) This week we will be working on personal narratives. How perfect does this tie into MLK????? After reading about what he did for justice, my little rays will write about a time when we felt that we were treated unfair and how we felt. We will be learning about his dreams and then making a craft with OUR dreams. In science, we will review what we have learned about penguins and write about what we would do if we were penguins :) By now, we are prepping ourselves for FIRST GRADE (wait, time slow down!! I don't want my rays to leave me!!) so we practice our first grade writing, which really gets my kiddos to take their time and do their best!
Have to Do: I have to finish my 100th Day plans! How crazy is it that we are so close to 100 days of school?!? Our 100th day will be Friday, January 29th. Prepare for the crazy!!! I have to start Grad School this week! What is more fun than teaching at a school all day???? Answer: going BACK to school during the night ;) I also have to decide what hairstyle I am going to go with because these long locks are dragging your girl down! To chop, chop, chop or to go with just a trim???

Hope to Do: I hope to relax and tackle my to do list on my day off! I also hope to FINALLY get a manicure. It has been like, 4 weeks since I decided to treat myself and I have YET to make an appointment. Hopefully can check that off by the end of the week ;)

Love to Do: I will LOVE snuggling up on the couch all day Sunday/Monday because it will be too cold for this girl to be outdoors. Netflix will be my go-to along with some caffeine!

Well, the first week back to school after winter break has come and gone, AND I AM ALIVE!! I was thrilled to get back to my schedule and my little rays, but not knowing if we were in for a crazy, high-energy week was a bit scary! I have to say, this might have been our best week EVER. Seriously. Our new room set up, morning routine, and incentive system were instant hits! The behavior was minimum but the fun was MAXIMUM! So with week one out of the way, I am thrilled to start week two! Before the work week begins, however, it is time to link up with The Teaching Trio for Sunday Scoop!

Have to do: I have to finish laundry (this seems to be a recurring 'have to'), lesson plans, and shop for warmer clothes (UGH the snow and low temperatures have finally come).

Hope to do: READ! It has been a goal for me to read a book a week as a way to unwind and take my mind off of school before work. It is DEFINITELY something I will continue to do ;) I also hope to get a manicure because last week it did not work out!!

Happy to do: I will be happy to celebrate one of my high school friend's birthdays! Sometimes it is nice to take a break from the job and reminisce on the old days (aka 6 years ago)
Here we are starting a new year of adventures, happy thoughts, and positive minds and there isn't anyone I would rather do it with than my teaching bestie Beginnings With Baer!!! Speaking of, what a perfect opportunity to do a Twin Tuesday post!!! After getting out blog and insta schedules set, we talked about what kind of topics we could do, and with it being the first Tuesday of January, what better topic than our Goals for 2016!!!!

I like to think of this as a list of goals rather than resolutions. To me, the word goal gives me motivation, empowerment, and excitement. I am driven to reach that goal, whether personal, professional, etc. because I KNOW I can do it! The first part to setting goals is to make them achievable. I am obviously not going to make a goal that I get married, because let's be real, I am SINGLE AS A PRINGLE! Jokes aside, if the goal isn't attainable, what drive is there to get it done?? So here is a list of SOME of my goals heading into the 2016 year :)

PROFESSIONAL GOALS:

1. Be Organized- MUCH easier said than done! I have made it a goal to keep myself organized and on to of things so I am not at school at 6:30 in the morning until 7 at night! I don't want to spend all my hours after school and on the weekends catching up on things I haven't gotten to. I have made myself a schedule for the work week that I hope keeps me on track and working more efficiently! I also am going to keep two separate planners. One planner will be for work, the other for my social media scheduling. I need to keep to separate planners because I get so cluttered and than lose track of time! I am making it a goal to keep these planners up to date and ORGANIZED!

2. Be ME- I have this problem of liking everything I see on Pinterest or on Insta and immediately think I should try it out. When your try to juggle 100 balls, what is going to happen?! I'll give you a hint *it isn't pretty!!* There is nothing wrong with liking and loving all the things that you see posted, but they aren't all meant for your classroom and especially not all at once. Trying too many new things at once is going to lead to an unsuccessful turnout. I have come to realize that if there is something I am DYING to try, than go for it!!! But liking an idea doesn't mean I have to try it!

3. Social Media- I am making the statement now, SO HOLD ME TO IT, to stick with my posting schedules and be ACTIVE on my social media platforms. It is a goal to post on Instagram EVERY DAY! That may seem like a lot, but one post on instagram really takes about 1-2 minutes! And is even easier when you plan what kind of post you want to do. I want to make sure that I post pictures of all aspects of our learning! I love being able to scroll through my instagram page and look at the progress my kiddos have made and to see their own growth! I mean they were just BABIES a few months ago!! I also need to be WAY more active on this blog! I love writing and expressing myself, but seem to let time slip away and with that time follows my motivation. Well not anymore!!!!! I plan to be posting at least 3 times a week (if not more!) to start with. I want to make sure that I am keeping up with my goals because since starting this blog I have felt so refreshed, so happy, and so reflective!

4. Positive Vibes ONLY- I am going to do my absolute best to steer clear from the negative vibes that float around in a school. I want to keep myself healthy both mind and body, and to do that, I am sticking to happy thoughts and positive mindset! Everyone has a bad day, trust me, I KNOW, but I do not want to dwell in it. I want to stand tall, feel good, and be my best. I want to LAUGH and SMILE. Plain and simple: I want to ENJOY THE DAY!

PERSONAL GOALS:

1. Drink water- If you know me, you know that Diet Dr. Pepper runs through my veins! They say our body is made up of , I would place a bet that mine is filled with the carbonated beverage I so lovingly call "soda"<3 I mean my kiddos know something is up if they don't see a Polar Pop on my desk in the morning!! This year I really need to drink more water! As an avid runner, I have experienced the light-headedness and dizziness that not drinking water can cause, yet I haven't learned. NOT THIS YEAR! I am going to have my morning soda because, well, I don't want to scare my little rays, but after that it is allllll water for this girl! Except for the occasional "get-me-through-the-day-before-my-hair-falls-out soda";)

2. Eat better- Oy vey! The dreaded "New year, new me" thing. For me, eating better isn't necessarily because I eat a lot of bad food, but I have poor eating habits! My family isn't big eaters, so meals are something that aren't important! I rarely eat breakfast, usually snack on some crackers or Goldfish for lunch, and for dinner just eat a baked potato. This year I want to start meal prepping each Sunday. By cooking my food and getting it ready for the week ahead, I am going to be more likely to eat and meet my nutritional needs :)

3. Keep a budget- Lord Almighty can I get an AMEN!!! I mean, if you are a teacher, you know that money doesn't grow on trees! I realized after my first year teaching that there was just no way I could afford to spend as much money as I had spent on my classroom. Likewise, I was spending money material things that I simply didn't need! ear I am ready to keep a strict monthly budget and save myself plenty of money!

4. Pray more, worry less! I need a shirt that says this. NO JOKE. I cannot thing of a more simple and meaningful phrase to use as a motto for this year. I am very strong in my faith and have found so much peace and happiness in my relationship with God. Through every difficultly in life, He has been there. God will never lead you on a path that he is not on. Remembering that everything happens for a reason brings ease into my thoughts. If you know me, you know I am an anxious person and a very big worrier. I have a tendency to think about the 'what-ifs' and need to remind myself that everything will be okay. By not worrying and placing my trust in the Lord, I am more enlightened, more at peace, and more thankful. Every night before I go to bed, I say my prayers and the last line I say is the same, "Lord, please help me to remember what is truly important in life. Help me want to be who you want me to be." I have never felt more confident in myself than when I am reminded that I am living for Him. I hope that I can continue to grow more Christlike this year.

Happy 2016, my friends! What are some of your goals?! Be sure to head over to Beginnings with Baer to check out her goals :)

Lessons plans! First week back with kiddos starts Tuesday, so I need to finish my plans up! I also have to get my January box out of storage and take it to school with me so I can get stations ready for the week. And lastly, MAKE A BUDGET. I did a pretty good job last year saving money but would love to do an even better job this year!

Hope to do:

I hope to get a manicure some time this week! This girl's nails are in some dire need of some pampering! I also hope to survive the week since it will be the first time back in two weeks!!!

Love to do:

Read a book. I would love to head to the library and choose a book to read this week for relaxation and winding down. I love reading and I think incorporating a book a week to help unwind after a day would be awesome!

Right now I am listening to Friends. I have kind of been on a Friends Netflix binge this break. I find myself cracking up more and more at Chandler and Ross! Let's be honest, the show NEVER gets old!!

Loving- I am loving this two week break from school!! I have been able to hang out with my puppy and family a lot and catch up on some sleep! Two weeks is enough though, I am eager to see my little rays!!

Thinking- I am currently thinking about all that I have to do this weekend. Also about how good cinnamon rolls sound right now. Come to think of it, I believe I have some in the fridge! Hello breakfast ;)

Wanting- A shopping spree for some new winter clothes would be just lovely ;) A girl can never have too many clothes, right??

Needing- Sunshine. With our power outage and stormy days, we have not had too much vitamin D! I am a girl who needs a little bit of sunshine to get through the day. Also, if spring wanted to hurry up, I wouldn't be sad!!

One Word: BLISS. I have this feeling of overwhelming bliss right now. I am so grateful for the time I have gotten to spend with my family over break, all of the love I get from my little rays on a daily basis (which I can't wait to get back to!) and I just feel at peace! I am ready to start 2016 off with positive thoughts and a happy heart :)

Well there ya have it! I hope everyone has had happy holidays and AN AMAZING START TO THEIR NEW YEAR! Let's all KICK SOME BOOTY!! Long sleeved, short sleeved, you name it, I love it! I have a few drawers thag are dedicated soley to tshirts. My grade school, high school, and college tshirts definitely take the majority! However, I have so many other fun tshirts that are perfect for everyday wear!

One shirt I want to brag about for a hot second is my Teacher Blogger shirt that I got for FREE (yes, reread that) from A+ Images! They had an amazing promotion earlier this year that allowed teacher bloggers to design their short based off of their logo and colors! The ease of ordering and QUICKNESS with shipping are two amazing reasons why I loved working with them! The shirt was amazingly soft and exactly what I pictured! The quality of my blog design was picture perfect!! I can't wait to work with them again and HIGHLY recommend them for your next shirt order!

We got to find out elf in quite a few places this week!! He has kept us busy and on our toes with our behavior! He leaves little notes and reminders that totally have helped my kiddos remember the expectations! Nothing has been as much fun as seeing my little rays look all around excitedly trying to find where Candy Cane is each day!

UGLY SWEATER DAY!

I am a huge fan of dressing up on any occasion, but getting decked out in holiday attire is just my absolute favorite!!! This year, I donned a new soft and fuzzy red tree skirt! I paired it with my 'Happy Holla Days' shirt and candy cane socks! Topped it off with my cheetah hat and life was GOOD!!! My kiddos loved it!!
